Dear Canada: let US war resisters stay! Vigil at the Canadian Consulate
Stop the Deportation of Corey Glass! Let US War Resisters Stay!
Vigil at the Canadian Consulate - 701 4th Ave S, Minneapolis
Wednesday, July 9 - 12 noon to 1pm
Hundreds of US servicemembers and their families have fled to Canada as a way to resist the Iraq war. Canadian public opinion is on their side, and on June 3 Parliament passed a historic motion to officially welcome them. But the ruling Conservative government has announced that it plans to ignore the motion and begin sending the resisters back to the US to face years in prison, stigmatizing discharges or re-deployment to Iraq.
The first deportation is scheduled for July 10 against 25-year old Corey Glass, an Iraq combat veteran who fled to Canada in 2006 to resist a second deployment. If he is returned to the US and jailed for desertion, Amnesty International will consider him a prisoner of conscience.
Join us at the Canadian consulate to show your support for war resisters and to tell the Harper government to respect the democratic process and them stay. Sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War - Minnesota, Veterans for Peace Chapter 80 and the Sanctuary Project
