URGENT ALERT: Minnesota activists jailed in Israel
We have just learned that Israeli security forces have refused entry to three U.S. activists attempting to visit the Palestinian Territories. One of them, Karen Sullivan, is being sent home on a flight tonight, and two others, Sarah Martin and Katrina Plotz have refused to leave, and are being taken into custody. They are being treated as criminals, while their only goal was to learn about the reality of life for the Palestinian people. All three should be allowed to enter the country, as millions of tourists do every year.
Given the special relationship that the U.S. has with Israel, it is no surprise that U.S. citizens would want to travel there, and see how our tax dollars are spent. In spite of its special relationship with the U.S., the Israeli government showed no regard for the rights of American visitors, whose only crime was to express solidarity with the people of occupied Palestine.
Palestinians experience repression every day. There is no way to travel to Palestinian cities, or from one Palestinian city to another, without passing through Israeli military checkpoints. Palestinian refugees who live outside the territories, have a legal right to return home, but face the same obstacles that stopped Karen, Katrina and Sarah at the Tel Aviv airport today.
Katrina and Sarah have refused to cooperate in the face of this injustice, and have been sent to an Israeli jail. They have been told they will not be allowed to enter the country, and instead will be handcuffed and forced onto a departing plane.
We urge everyone to call, write and fax the officials below to demand the immediate release for Katrina Plotz and Sarah Martin, and to urge Israeli authorities to allow both women into the country to witness the reality of life inside the Palestinian Territories, where they have been invited and are welcome. sunday calling experiences
calling the israeli consulate in chicago is useless. the phone is on an endless loop where you get the greeting and are told "in an emergency and only an emergency press 8" and when you press 8 you get a few seconds of silence and then the original greeting again.
i talked to someone at the state department in d.c. who knew about the situation and said they were getting the consular support u.s. citizens are entitled to but that israel is a sovereign country... i told him a sovereign country we give $15 million a day in aid to! he ignored that.
i asked what sort of democracy deports people who are not guilty of any crime. he said they are a sovereign country but he was sure that they wouldn't deport people for no reason. i said but i know these women and they have never been to israel before so they could not be wanted for any crime in israel and they were stopped at the airport and told to go back so they couldn't have done anything on the ground there. he said he had another emergency call to take but assured me they were keeping informed.
i made the international long distance call to israel. i could not get through to the department of the interior but i did reach the "duty officer" at the u.s. embassy. she said after hours there is only one staff person there and she is it til tomorrow morning israel time (and she was getting ready to go out to a movie!). but she had spoken with sarah and said they were being sent back because they lied on their "entry forms." she said she isn't sure what would have happened if they told the truth on the forms but the fact is they lied and the u.s. would do the same thing if they caught someone lying on their entry forms (i.e. deny them entry). she said the first woman (that would be karen) signed the voluntary departure form and was sent back last night (there are delta flights to the u.s. from israel departing at 10:30 and 11:30 pm). she felt it was "too bad" sarah and katrina refused to sign the forms because they will be sent home anyway and now they will never be able to return. she said she didn't think there would be any hearing because they had not asked for an "appeal" of the decision, so they will probably just be sent home against their will on the plane tonight but that the detention authorities would not tell her for sure (or couldn't). she said they would not call her with updates but that she will probably check in with them after she returns from the movie. i told her i would report to others because many of us in minnesota are very concerned. she said we don't have to worry. israel is not a third world country. they are in no danger. they are being well treated. they would have been in much more danger if they actually got in to the west bank. i said i'm pretty sure they had friends to visit in the west bank and she said that didn't matter the state department warns u.s. citizens about traveling to the west bank for a reason, it is not safe. she said she is a government official and she is not allowed to travel there. i mentioned to her that the u.s gives massive aid to israel and u.s. citizens and certainly u.s. officials have a right to check up on how that money is being spent. she said she had to go.
i tried to calls sarah's cell but got her voice mail. the u.s. embassy woman had told me that sarah and katrina would certainly have access to their stuff, including their cell phones. that's all for now. if they manage to stay until tomorrow it will be possible to reach a lot more people. i can't get through to anyone helpful on a sunday (sunday night in israel).
thanks for the efforts, please keep me posted

More conversations with US Embassy in Tel Aviv
The best information I have is that they are on a plane back. This is via the U.S. Embassy. I am not sure of this, as some of her information has been inaccurate so far...
So far as I know, they didn't get to see the lawyer today (it's now midnite there).
I talked with Katrina and Sarah yesterday, just before they were taken from the airport to a detention facility. Karen S is back, frustrated and tired, but safe and healthy.
Tenatively... we want to do a press conf tomorrow, upon their return. I expect them to arrive at 12:30, and haven't finalized when and where to do the press conference. If they aren't back, we will still do a press conference, but with Jon Plotz, and Karen S....
later...
i called the US embassy duty officer in Tel Aviv again. she said that the best info she has is that they are on a plane now coming back here. she said she had spoken to sarah about 10 pm and that they were getting on a plane to come back. but she also said a bunch of other stuff that i can't accept. i asked what about meeting with their lawyers, did they get to do that? did they get a chance to file their appeal? she said there is not really an appeal and so there is no need for lawyers to be involved. you get to the airport and if they won't let you in, they won't let you in. she denied that they were ever removed from the airport or in custody of anyone other than airport security. basically they just got held at the airport until they could be sent home (which israel can do, if they don't want you in, you don't get in) and now they are on their way. it is strange because before she had told me that they gave up their right to appeal (which i also didn't believe) and now she is telling me that it is not something you can appeal. she also didn't tell me if they signed the voluntary deportation form or not. she did tell me last time that if they don't sign it they would still be deported but if they are "involuntarily" deported they will never be allowed back in. i don't know what to think.
thanks much...
