Copwatch Training and Practice

10/24/2009 16:30

COPWATCH TRAINING AND PRACTICE
Saturday, October 24, 4:30 p.m.
Walker Church, 3100 16th Ave, Minneapolis
We'll hold a training for people who want to get involved in copwatching either formally through CUAPB or in your own neighborhoods.  We'll go over your rights in general, your rights as a copwatcher and keeping yourself safe, how to copwatch, what to document.  Then we'll head out to the homeless shelter to practice what we have learned and to provide a measure of protection for people most affected by brutal policing.

Darryl Robinson's "Copwatch" Case Dismissed Before Trial

Darryl Robinson's case in Hennepin County Court was dismissed on Monday afternoon. Robinson was charged with obstruction of legal process, disorderly conduct, and obstructing a sidewalk after being beaten unconscious by Minneapolis Police while copwatching outside a shelter last July. Communities United Against Police Brutality writes:

In an exciting courtroom victory today, charges leveled against CUAPB Vice President Darryl Robinson after he was beaten and arrested during copwatch were suddenly dropped by the prosecution in the middle of jury selection. We believe this was indicative of the weakness of the case, once the prosecution realized there were a number of witnesses who could collaborate Darryl's recollections of the incident. Darryl still faces one count of trespass for a previous copwatch incident and that case will go to trial on March 23rd but for now we are all relishing the wonderful victory today.

COURTWATCH: DARRYL ROBINSON'S TRIAL

Stand with CUAPB vice president Darryl Robinson as he fights false charges placed on him after Minneapolis police beat him during copwatch. Cops punched him and choked him to unconsciousness repeatedly--while he was handcuffed. Now he faces ridiculous charges including "obstructing the sidewalk," "failure to obey a cop" and "obstructing legal charges." Darryl has vowed to fight these charges to the end and we need to be there with him. COPWATCH IS NOT A CRIME AND COPWATCHERS ARE NOT CRIMINALS!

COPWATCH/KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAINING

Given the lack of formal police accountability mechanisms in the Twin Cities Communities United Against Police Brutality is starting off the new year teaching the community how to document police conduct, which will allow us to hold police accountable ourselves. Documenting police conduct is a completely legal activity but the documentation only has value if it is done correctly. Join to learn about your rights and how to capture police conduct on film and by other means.

Communities United Against Police Brutality: All Hands On Deck For RNC Actions!

ALL HANDS ON DECK FOR RNC ACTIONS!
During the Republican Convention, CUAPB will play a number of important roles. Along with copwatch as noted above, we'll be involved in jail medical support, jail exit support, documentation of cases through our hotline, court watch/court support, and even assisting homeless people being swept aside in both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. It will take a lot of hands and we really need your help. You can plug in by coming to one of the copwatch trainings listed above or coming to our volunteer meeting on Saturday, August 23 at 1:30 p.m. at Walker Church. If you can't make it to the trainings or meeting, please email us back with your contact phone number and how you'd like to be involved.

First event on the list will be the Critical Mass on August 29th. This will be the one year anniversary of the attack on Critical Mass that resulted in many injuries and 19 arrests. It will also be a kind of kick off event for protests against the RNC. As such, we think the MPD may have "special plans" for this event and we need all copwatchers out with us that day.
